This was part of Galliford Try’s Hexham Middle School and Queen Elizabeth High School projects. The £38m project, which provides accommodation for over 1,900 students aged between 9 and 18 years old, combines a middle school and high school, as well as a sixth form college, on a shared campus.
The project successfully addresses the many challenges posed by the site such as the retention and enhancement of existing Grade II-listed heritage assets, extensive protected and high quality landscape, complex topography and edge of green belt development, while allowing the existing school to remain operational throughout the construction works.
To overcome the proximity of the trees behind the wall, the slope of the site and the curve of the wall, we completely re-designed the previous L shaped walls into shorter stepped and curved Georoc walls.
The retaining walls which measure up to 3.6m high, 3m wide and cover 300 sq metres were manufactured locally at our Geocast factory, eliminating the requirement of a bricklayer or any supply chain issues.
We overcame the challenging site conditions to provide sustainable, cost-effective and attractive retaining wall solutions for the client. We have currently designed and installed two out of the four requested Geowalls in a slate grey textured finish, to blend into the surrounding landscape and provide a close colour to adjacent buildings.
